What Is CCT? Correlated Colour Temperature Explained (with LED and Surgical Light Examples)

CCT meaning in lighting: what correlated color temperature is, the Kelvin scale, what the CCT switch symbol on LED lights does, and which CCT surgical lights use.

Three LED surgical light domes glowing warm white, neutral white and cool white above an operating table

CCT (correlated colour temperature) describes how warm or cool white light looks. It appears on every LED datasheet, on packaging, and as a small CCT switch on many modern fixtures. In surgery it matters for tissue contrast and for surgeon comfort over long procedures. This guide gives the CCT meaning in plain words and shows how it is applied in medical lighting.

Definition: CCT is the temperature, in kelvin (K), of a theoretical black-body radiator whose colour most closely matches the light source. Lower K = warmer, more yellow light; higher K = cooler, bluer light.

Why it is "correlated"

An incandescent filament really is hot, and its colour follows the black-body curve. LEDs and fluorescent lamps do not glow because of heat, and their colour sits slightly off that curve. Their CCT is therefore the closest match on the curve — hence correlated colour temperature. How far the light sits off the curve is called Duv.

The CCT scale

CCTAppearanceTypical use
2,700–3,000 KWarm whiteHomes, hospitality, patient rooms at night
3,500–4,000 KNeutral whiteOffices, corridors, retail
4,500–5,000 KNeutral to coolClinics, examination rooms, surgical lights (fixed CCT)
5,500–6,700 KCool / daylightInspection, some surgical settings

Halogen bulbs sit around 3,000–3,400 K on their own; halogen surgical lamps use filters to reach around 4,500 K. Read more in LED vs halogen surgical lights.

What the CCT switch symbol means

On commercial LED fixtures — downlights, panels, high-bays — a small slide switch labelled CCT with values such as 3000K / 4000K / 5000K lets you pick the colour temperature at installation. Some products label it "CCT selectable" or "tunable white". It does not change the light output in lumens much, only the colour.

Medical lights take this further: LED surgical lights with continuously adjustable CCT let the surgeon change colour during the procedure from the control panel.

CCT in surgical lighting

The surgical luminaire standard IEC 60601-2-41 requires a CCT between 3,000 K and 6,700 K. Within that range:

  • Warmer settings (around 3,500–4,000 K) give a softer look and can help on red, well-perfused tissue.
  • Neutral settings (around 4,500 K) are the most common default.
  • Cooler settings (5,000–6,700 K) increase perceived contrast on some structures.

CCT vs CRI vs R9

  • CCT — the colour of the light.
  • CRI (Ra) — how faithfully it renders a set of test colours (IEC 60601-2-41 requires Ra 85–100 for surgical lights).
  • R9 — the saturated-red test colour, critical for distinguishing blood and tissue. Several Keling lamps specify R9 ≥ 97.

A lamp should be judged on all three. See how to choose a surgical light for the full specification checklist.

CCT in hospital lighting

Beyond the operating room, many hospitals use cooler CCT for clinical tasks and warmer CCT in patient rooms in the evening. Our hospital lighting guide covers room-by-room choices.

Key takeaways

  • CCT is measured in kelvin and describes colour appearance, not brightness.
  • A CCT switch lets one fixture serve several colour temperatures.
  • Surgical lights must stay within 3,000–6,700 K; adjustable CCT gives surgeons flexibility.
  • Always read CCT together with Ra and R9.

Frequently asked questions

What does CCT mean in lighting?

CCT stands for correlated colour temperature. It describes whether white light looks warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish) and is expressed in kelvin (K). Lower values such as 2,700 K look warm; higher values such as 6,500 K look cool.

What is the CCT switch on an LED light?

A CCT switch — often marked with three small temperature values such as 3000K / 4000K / 5000K — lets the installer or user choose the colour temperature of a single fixture instead of stocking a separate model for each colour.

Is a higher CCT brighter?

Not in lux terms. CCT describes the colour of light, not the quantity. Cooler light can look brighter to some people, but illuminance must be measured with a lux meter.

What CCT do surgical lights use?

IEC 60601-2-41 requires surgical luminaires to have a correlated colour temperature between 3,000 K and 6,700 K. Many LED surgical lights, including several Keling models, let the surgeon adjust within that range; fixed-CCT models are typically around 4,500 K.

What is the difference between CCT and CRI?

CCT describes the colour appearance of the light itself; CRI (Ra) describes how accurately the light reveals the colours of objects. Two lamps can share the same CCT but have very different CRI.
